“It’s an honour that reflects the dedication and skill of our team and the impact of our advice.” Steve Maggs, Tax Partner at RRL

Being shortlisted alone was a significant achievement, but becoming the first firm in Cornwall to win this prestigious award is unprecedented. This national recognition highlights the exceptional tax advisory expertise within our independent Cornwall-based firm, and reflects our continued commitment to providing high-level, proactive tax advice.

Why Proactive Tax Advice Matters

Tax affects all of us—whether you’re an individual planning your future or a business owner making key decisions. Tax is a huge consideration in the majority of financial decisions and transactions that we are all involved in – from being an expense deducted from proceeds on sale, from income, from profit, from an estate on death etc (often a sizeable one unless managed). Often this tax expense (in the form of tax liabilities) can be mitigated, and at least planned for, with proactive tax advice.

At RRL, we believe routine tax compliance—such as filing tax returns—is only the starting point. The real value lies in proactive tax planning, where we help our clients identify risks and opportunities before they arise.

A Volatile Tax Landscape Calls for Proactive Planning

As we all know, the tax landscape is currently extremely volatile and has been since polling figures highlighted the gap in the polling for the Conservative party then in government and the Labour party opposition (around late 2023). This culminating with the hotly anticipated Autumn Budget 2024, that was arguably the most important fiscal announcement since that of March 2008. This volatility and the added trepidation around the UK’s economic position the UK finds itself has resulted in an increased demand for proactive tax advice. Tax advice has always been hugely important, but in times such as these, it is magnified.

“Advisory” and “tax advice” covers a multitude of different things and can mean different things to different people. However, here, we are referring to real proactive advice.

Routine tax compliance—preparing and filing tax returns—is, on its own, about reporting, not advising. For us, this routine is just the starting point.

The tax compliance process should spark conversations about tax risks and opportunities, opening the door to meaningful, proactive advice, which is why we prioritise advise in everything we do.

However, in Cornwall, access to specialist tax advice remains limited. Despite a strong local economy and many successful businesses, too few are receiving the proactive tax planning they could benefit from.

We believe that we are the only firm in Cornwall that has the concentration of tax advisors, and the tax advisory capability to adequately service the tax advisory needs of the many individuals and businesses in Cornwall

Award-Winning Advice in Action: £14m in Tax Savings

To give just one example, well ahead of the Autumn Budget, we proactively advised clients on changes we anticipated and outlined mitigation strategies they could put in place. We engaged in numerous planning pieces for clients particularly concerned by the inheritance tax changes around Business Property Relief that ended-up being announced. Two of these planning projects alone saved the families/businesses a total of £14m in inheritance tax (with many sizeable savings for others) – this due to the capability and knowledge to develop informed opinions of likely changes, having the conviction to tell clients what our speculative thoughts about tax changes were, and having the experience and unique, wider service offering to implement the planning.

National Recognition for a Cornwall-Based Firm

It is this capability and approach that has been recognised with us winning this prestigious and nationally recognised award. We are incredibly proud of everyone involved in the tax offering here at RRL.
