Steve Maggs LLB CTA

Tax Partner

Steve is the Firm’s Tax Partner heading up our tax team. He is a Chartered Tax Adviser with over a decade of experience in the tax profession and has spent the majority of his career with the ‘Big Four’ firm Deloitte, before heading up the tax department of a member firm of the Moore Stephens network. Steve joined the firm in September 2015 and became Partner in June 2016.

Steve provides private client and corporation tax support to individuals and private companies and has worked with a wide range of clients throughout his career (including high net worth individuals, landed estates, trusts, partnerships, entrepreneurs, family businesses, and private companies), this experience providing him with a broad and in depth tax knowledge.

Steve’s particular areas of expertise include: succession (both personal and corporate) and estate planning; capital tax planning; tax aspects of equity incentivisation; R & D tax relief claims; transactional tax advisory support; real estate; and providing tax dispute resolution services.

Nick Skerratt

Nick Skerratt BA (Hons) FCA CTA


A proud Cornishman, Nick is as an experienced Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser. He was appointed a Partner in 2012 and was one of the first Chartered Accountants in England and Wales to be licensed to undertake probate work by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

He deals with a range of businesses, advising on accounts and business matters whilst all the time being very tax focused. Nick prides himself on the working relationships he develops with his clients.

Nick regularly advises on succession planning (both personal and corporate), restructuring, acquisitions, disposals and inheritance tax.

Nick has personal experience in business, having been co-director of a company which developed several properties in West Cornwall. Nick enjoys most sports, being part of many successful St Just cricket teams, and spends his spare time with his wife and two sons.

Polly Tregaskes BEng (Hons) FCA CTA

Tax Manager

Polly joined the firm as a Chartered Accountant trainee in July 2001 having achieved a first class degree in Mineral Engineering. She qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2004 and went on to specialise in taxation.

Polly qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2005 and is now a Tax Manager in the firm’s tax team. She has a general knowledge of both personal and corporate taxation and is responsible for managing the firm’s trust clients. She also assists Stephen Gainey, the firm’s VAT specialist, with VAT matters.

Polly is a keen sailor in her spare time and regularly takes part in local racing.

Alex Reed BSc (Hons) ACA CTA

Senior Tax Associate

Alex was educated at Truro School and has lived in Cornwall all his life. He graduated with a degree in Mathematics from the University of Bristol in 2012, joining the firm immediately after. In 2015, Alex passed his Chartered Accountancy exams to become a Chartered Accountant, and in 2016, passed his Chartered Tax Adviser exams.

Through spending the majority of his time at the firm dealing in taxation, Alex has obtained a breadth of tax expertise. He has experience of private client matters, having worked predominantly in this sector in his early years at the firm, and is also experienced with regards to corporate clients, assisting Partner Simon Reed with his client base. Alex is also involved with advising on the business restructuring service offered by the firm under Tax Partner Steve Maggs.

Alex is an active sportsman and as well as his golf, plays hockey for a local team (where he is also the treasurer) and is also a keen skier. Now that he has returned from university, his aim is to cut his handicap to five, currently seven, and to hit the slopes more frequently.

Aneta Williams BA ATT

Aneta joined the Tax Team in early 2017, having previously worked for a number of corporate finance firms in London. Alongside providing assistance to Tax Partner Steve Maggs and preparing taxation advice for clients, Aneta is currently studying towards becoming a Chartered Tax Adviser.

Aneta has worked with a wide range of clients during her career, ranging from ultra-high net worth individuals and family businesses to private companies, and brings in-depth tax knowledge gained through her experience over the years.

Aneta made the choice to move to Cornwall to enjoy more of the countryside living, beautiful surroundings and to be closer to family already living in the region. In her spare time, Aneta enjoys running, yoga, cycling, watching films and creative healthy cooking.

Tegan Smith

Tegan joined the firm in 2015. She is a Trainee Tax Assistant based in the Tax team and studying towards completing her Level 3 AAT.

Tegan studied five A levels in Cornwall and has always enjoyed Maths, hence her decision to study towards her accountancy exams. She would eventually like to become a Chartered Tax Adviser.

Tegan spends all her own time playing sport. She plays cricket for the Cornwall ladies team and Redruth men and women’s teams and Rugby for the Cornwall women’s rugby team.
