Stephen Gainey BA (Hons) FCA


Stephen qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1987 and became Partner in 1996.

He has a general practice background, with particular emphasis on the small family business sector, along with considerable experience of personal tax return cases.

He is the firm’s VAT Partner and also supervises the firm’s management accounts and accounting software functions.

Stephen’s interests include photography, travel and languages – notably French and his native Cornish – all of which are combined on his visits to Brittany. He also enjoys walking the Coast Path. Stephen became a Cornish Bard in 2012.

Tax Partner

Steve is the Firm’s Tax Partner heading up our tax team. He is a Chartered Tax Adviser with over a decade of experience in the tax profession and has spent the majority of his career with the ‘Big Four’ firm Deloitte, before heading up the tax department of a member firm of the Moore Stephens network. Steve joined the firm in September 2015 and became Partner in June 2016.

Steve provides private client and corporation tax support to individuals and private companies and has worked with a wide range of clients throughout his career (including high net worth individuals, landed estates, trusts, partnerships, entrepreneurs, family businesses, and private companies), this experience providing him with a broad and in depth tax knowledge.

Steve’s particular areas of expertise include: succession (both personal and corporate) and estate planning; capital tax planning; tax aspects of equity incentivisation; R & D tax relief claims; transactional tax advisory support; real estate; and providing tax dispute resolution services.

Simon Reed BSc (Hons) ACA


Simon was born and bred in Truro and after finishing at Truro School completed a degree in Medical Genetics from the University of Leicester in 2005. After deciding chromosomes were not for him and wanting to return to his roots, he joined RRL. He completed his Chartered Accountancy qualification in 2009 and was appointed a general practice Partner in 2014.

He specialises in limited company accounts and audits, whether they are small, medium or large, and charity accounts and audits with their specific disclosure requirements. He is currently completing his Diploma in Charity Accounting to strengthen his knowledge in this area. Simon completes the cycle of advice to his clients by reviewing and completing their personal tax returns.

When out of the office, and not travelling, Simon can often be found on the golf course. He also plays league hockey and is currently the Chairman of his club, having previously acted as treasurer for over 10 years. Simon’s next targets are to continue to lower his golf handicap, improve his snowboarding and to explore more world destinations.

Nick Skerratt

Nick Skerratt BA (Hons) FCA CTA


A proud Cornishman, Nick is as an experienced Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser. He was appointed a Partner in 2012 and was one of the first Chartered Accountants in England and Wales to be licensed to undertake probate work by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

He deals with a range of businesses, advising on accounts and business matters whilst all the time being very tax focused. Nick prides himself on the working relationships he develops with his clients.

Nick regularly advises on succession planning (both personal and corporate), restructuring, acquisitions, disposals and inheritance tax.

Nick has personal experience in business, having been co-director of a company which developed several properties in West Cornwall. Nick enjoys most sports, being part of many successful St Just cricket teams, and spends his spare time with his wife and two sons.

Mark Williams BA (Hons) FCA DChA


Mark joined the firm in 1999 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2002. He became a Partner in 2014.

Mark heads the firm’s charities and not for profit practice, which includes a large number of well known local charities and social enterprises. In recognition of his experience in the sector, he has attained the prestigious Diploma in Charity Accounting issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

He specialises in the care home sector as well as providing advice to a range of small and medium-sized businesses on accounts, audit and taxation issues.

Mark’s family farmed at St Levan, in the far west of Cornwall, for generations and given this background he also acts for many farmers and landed estates.

Mark is trustee and treasurer of the Duchy Health Charity, one of the larger grant making charities in the county.

In his spare time, Mark enjoys playing tennis and relaxing with friends and family.
